My Paradoxical Knives (2009)

Ali Moini

Hey sky don’t turn without me… Hey moon don’t shine without me… Hey earth don’t grow without me… Hey time don’t pass without me – Rumi

Simultaneously poetic and political, My Paradoxical Knives creates an image of a turning man who becomes the center of moving knives. Singing the Rumi poem and gyrating, he wipes out the written words with his dancing feet. The circular movements refer to those of Sufi dance, but the experience of unity is linked here to vulnerability and danger. This memorable trance-like solo is like a deep breath.
