Mohamed Toukabri began dancing at the age of 13. He joined the Sybel Ballet Theatre (TN) led by Syhéme Belkhodja and worked with them from 2002 until 2008. At the age of 16, Toukabri was trained in Paris at the International Academy of Dance. He returned to Tunis in 2007 to study at the Mediterranean Centre for Contemporary Dance. In 2008, he joined P.A.R.T.S. school for contemporary dance in Brussels.
During his studies, Toukabri participated in Babel by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet. From 2013 to 2018, Toukabri was a member of the international performance company Needcompany, founded by Jan Lauwers and Grace Ellen Barkey. He performed in Zeitung (2013) and Sacré Printemps! (2014). Currently, Toukabri is working with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui again. He is part of the opera Shell Shock, A Requiem of war, of Nomad and the opera Alceste choreographed for the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich.
The Upside Down Man, premiered May 2018, is Toukabri’s first work as a choreographer. He is currently touring with this solo piece and is preparing a new production, a duet with his mother, which will premiere in spring 2020.
