A Place to Dwell

Wherever you walk and listen, and online

Thursday 28 November – Wednesday 4 December

We are all overlapping geographies; how to be in solidarity? A Place to Dwell invites artists, walkers, dancers, activists, anyone, regardless of their locality, to join Legacy & Seeds’ collective space. This work recognises and expresses that we are bound together with each other and the planet. None of us is free till all of us are free. Walk with us: In grief, with feelings of sorrow, anger, joy or longing. Come as you are.

A Place to Dwell is a performance that stretches over a week and takes place in multiple languages and wherever in the world each individual participant walks, listens, joins the Listening Spaces and connects their story.

The performance develops over 7 days, repeating a two-part structure daily:

  1. An audio piece/proposition to listen to each day while you walk, wherever you are in the world.
  2. A ritual of coming together in the online Listening Space every evening.

The audio works, each day created by different artists, interact with the layers of each person’s walked environment. Each (urban) landscape emerges as part of an overlapping scenography in the Listening Spaces: All embody different scars of our colonial and extractive living histories. The Listening Spaces are communal, performative, and formed every evening by each person’s presence. Through a ritual of listening and sharing, experiences and perspectives interweave with the audio works into collective re-narrations. A Place to Dwell is both a desire and a question.

*Themes in the audios are: the body in society; overlapping geographies of war, migration, memory; the city as communal garden, foraging as resistance; the historical layers of political, industrial oppression and lost wildness in landscape; nature as the original womb; humans as ecosystem, environment, multi-species being.

*Each audio piece has been authored in Dutch, Arabic, Italian or English and translated & recorded so that each audio piece is available in all four languages.
The Listening Spaces are multiple language spaces. English, but also other languages, are welcome and spoken.

*Take your walk at a time you choose before the Listening Space.
The online Listening Space will open at 19:30 Amsterdam, Den Haag, Palermo, Berlin; 20:30 Ramallah, Cairo, Beirut, Baghdad; 21:00 Tehran every evening.
