No Admittance (2015)

Adrian Melis (Cuba) / de Appel Arts Centre, De Balie, Dancing on the Edge, A Different Jewish Voice

Empty date boxes, water containers, and peanut cans are some of the packagings left by Adrian Melis at the foyer of De Brakke Grond. At first sight, these products might appear as leftovers from a party or a random dinner. Together, they form a clear division line that borders the space. Having a closer look, it can be noticed that these products haven’t been aleatory selected; they stand for Israeli brands consumed in the Netherlands. With No Admittance, Melis attempts to question until what point a work may be ethically involved, reflecting on an issue that still brings encountered positions. Inspired by the cultural conference What’s Art Got to Do with It?, organized earlier this year by Dancing on the Edge, De Balie and A Different Jewish Voice.
