“When I was eleven, I beat up my pig and visited the prostitutes” – so the story begins. Moise, the Jewish boy later nicknamed Momo (short for Mohamed) lives in the Rue Bleue in Paris. His father, an unemployed lawyer, sits at home depressed and his mother has disappeared. Momo takes care of his father and does his daily shopping at the shop of ‘the Arab’, Mr. Ibrahim.
Somehow, a friendship blossoms between Mr. Ibrahim and the boy. He teaches Momo about life, happiness, Judaism, the Koran, and using a smile as a secret weapon. When Momo’s father commits suicide, Mr. Ibrahim adopts him. Together they journey to the land of the Fertile Crescent, the real homeland of Mr. Ibrahim.
